Pest control across North Brisbane, suburb by suburb

The inner north is Bruin's home ground and its oldest housing. Chermside packs a major retail and hospital precinct, a growing apartment sector and streets of post-war houses into a small area, so cockroaches moving between units, rodents working the retail waste stream and termite risk in the older homes all turn up in one suburb. Kedron is pre-war and post-war timber on stumps, much of it beside Kedron Brook, and structural timber close to damp ground is why termite inspection is the job we are asked for most there.

Aspley's post-war and 1970s homes sit on big blocks with forty years of established garden behind them, which drives ant trails, webbing spiders and quiet termite activity through the warmer months. Carseldine now holds two kinds of property, 1980s and 1990s brick homes with ageing termite barriers and the newer Carseldine Urban Village builds on compact lots, and they fail in different ways. Bridgeman Downs is large blocks, retained bushland and the Cabbage Tree Creek headwaters, so sheds, pools, decks and bush boundaries stretch the area a technician has to cover. Albion mixes pre-war Queenslanders with warehouses, breweries and cafes along Sandgate Road and Breakfast Creek, and both sides of that mix need different work.

Living a street from the bay changes what you deal with. Brighton's high water table, saltmarsh flats and post-war timber cottages produce persistent mosquito and biting midge activity, damp subfloors that suit subterranean termites, and rodents working the foreshore reserve. Sandgate has some of the oldest housing on the north side, turn-of-the-century timber cottages and Queenslanders on stumps a street or two from the foreshore, and century-old hardwood on damp ground makes termite inspection the service locals ask for most.

Bracken Ridge went up in a single wave through the late 1970s and 1980s, so thousands of homes share the same slab construction, the same timber roof framing and the same forty-year-old landscaping pressed against the wall, which is a textbook termite setup. Bald Hills runs down to the South Pine River flats and deals with pests the drier suburbs rarely see: mosquitoes off the wetlands, rats moving in from paddocks and drainage lines, and termites active in low-lying soil.

The corridor is newer, but new homes are not pest-free homes. North Lakes was designed around water, with lakes, wetland corridors and engineered drainage between the precincts, so mosquitoes and midges dominate summer while the retail and business park generates its own rodent and cockroach pressure. Mango Hill's estates were built close together, and a cockroach or rodent problem in one townhouse quickly becomes a problem for the row. Griffin was built out over the past decade on former farmland beside the North Pine River wetlands, where disturbed ground pushes ant colonies toward fresh slabs and every builder-installed termite system needs checking on schedule.

Murrumba Downs backs onto the river and its reserves, so the yard fills with mosquitoes at dusk in summer and rodents arrive as the weather cools. Bray Park sits between the North Pine River and the Strathpine commercial centre and catches termites and mosquitoes from the river side and rodents from the retail precinct. Eatons Hill is hilly, heavily treed and built against reserve, which brings rodents and spiders from the bush, wasp nests under high eaves and termites feeding on hardwood in the gullies. Albany Creek homes sit close to the South Pine River and the reserves along Cabbage Tree Creek, which is why subterranean termites, rodents and webbing spiders turn up there so consistently.
