Cockroach on a Brisbane kitchen surface -- Bruin treats cockroach infestations

Overview

Cockroaches are more than just an unpleasant sight. They move through drains, gardens, and waste areas before entering homes and businesses, contaminating surfaces with bacteria and creating a genuine hygiene risk. Brisbane's warm, humid climate provides ideal conditions for cockroaches to thrive all year round.

The most common species we encounter across North Brisbane include American, Australian, Smokybrown, and German cockroaches. Each species behaves differently, with some preferring gardens and subfloors while others live inside kitchens, bathrooms, or wall cavities. Correct identification is essential to ensure the right treatment is used.

Every service begins with a thorough inspection to identify the species, locate harbourage areas, and determine how the infestation is entering the property. Our licensed technicians then apply professional-grade products in the areas where they will be most effective, helping to eliminate existing activity and reduce the risk of future infestations.

General pest treatments, including most common household cockroach species, start from $180 and include our free service period. German cockroach infestations typically require a specialised treatment program and are quoted separately due to their unique biology and treatment requirements.

01

Signs you have cockroaches

Look for droppings that resemble ground pepper in drawers and cupboards, egg cases and shed skins in cavities, and a musty smell as the numbers grow. Cockroaches seen during the day usually means a larger population sheltering out of sight.

Activity clusters around warmth and water: behind the fridge and dishwasher, under the sink, and in the gaps around cabinetry.

German cockroach, the species most common in Brisbane kitchens and cavities

02

Why DIY sprays fall short

A surface spray kills the cockroaches on the bench but misses the harbourage in wall and cabinet cavities, and it does nothing to the egg cases. Because one egg case holds many young, the population rebuilds within weeks.

Worse, repeated over-the-counter spraying can push cockroaches to spread and build resistance, which makes the eventual professional treatment harder.

03

How we treat cockroaches

We identify the species, then place targeted gel bait in the cracks and cavities cockroaches use and apply residual treatment to the runs and entry points. The bait is carried back through the population, which is what deals with the numbers you cannot see.

For heavier infestations we set up a follow-up so the treatment catches newly hatched cockroaches before they breed.

04

German cockroaches are a different job

Of the species we deal with, the German cockroach is the one a general treatment will not clear. It lives entirely inside the building rather than coming in from the garden, and the female carries her egg case until it is nearly ready to hatch, which shields the next generation from the treatment that deals with the adults.

That is why German cockroach work is quoted as its own program with scheduled follow-up, rather than folded into a general treatment. If the cockroaches you are seeing are small, light brown, and marked with two dark stripes behind the head, start there instead.

05

Keeping them out

After treatment, small changes keep cockroaches from settling back in: fix leaks and reduce moisture, store food and pet food sealed, empty bins regularly, and seal the gaps around pipes and skirting where they travel.

For kitchens with constant pressure, an ongoing package keeps the cover topped up rather than waiting for the next sighting.

Safety and property care

Safe treatment, and care for your home

Cockroach treatment relies on gel bait placed inside cracks and cavities, not sprayed across benches, so kitchens stay usable while the bait does its work.

  • Gel bait, not surface sprayRegistered gel bait goes into gaps behind appliances, under sinks, and inside cabinetry, away from food prep surfaces.
  • Placed low, out of reachBait sits in cracks and cavities out of reach of curious hands, and we'll flag any spot to keep pets clear of until it's settled.
  • Kitchens keep operatingHomes and commercial kitchens don't need to shut down. We work around meal times or trading hours so the space is back in use quickly.
  • Clear cupboards beforehandEmpty the cupboards under sinks and pull the fridge or oven out slightly if you can, so we can reach where cockroaches actually shelter.

Andy completed a pest inspection at our property in Brisbane and his knowledge is second to none. He is very friendly and genuine and provided a great service. At the end of the pest inspection, he showed us through his findings and talked through different pest control methods and some things we could do to help lessen the chance of any termites finding the property attractive.

Common questions

Pest and termite questions, answered

How do I know if I have a cockroach problem?

The usual signs are cockroaches seen at night near the kitchen or bathroom, droppings that look like ground pepper in cupboards and drawers, egg cases and shed skins in cavities, and a musty smell when the numbers build. Smaller species stay close to warmth and moisture, so appliances and cabinetry are the first place to look. A few seen by day usually means a larger population out of sight.

Why do cockroaches keep coming back after I spray them?

Supermarket surface sprays kill the cockroaches you can see but miss the harbourage where the rest of the population and the egg cases sit. Because a single egg case holds many young, the numbers rebuild within weeks. Professional treatment uses targeted gel bait and residual work placed where cockroaches actually shelter and travel, so the treatment reaches the source rather than the survivors on the bench.

Do I need a professional, or can I treat cockroaches myself?

Light activity can sometimes be managed with good hygiene and bait, but an established cockroach infestation almost always needs a professional. They breed quickly, hide in wall and cabinet cavities, and build resistance to over-the-counter sprays. A technician identifies the species, treats the harbourage, and sets up follow-up where needed, which is what actually breaks the cycle.

Is cockroach treatment safe for children and pets?

Yes. We use registered products applied by a licensed technician, with gel bait placed in cracks and cavities away from where children and pets reach, and residual work kept to the right areas. We explain which surfaces to keep clear and for how long, usually just until things dry. If anyone in the home has allergies or sensitivities, tell us first and we adjust the plan.

Do you treat cockroaches in commercial kitchens?

Yes. Cafes, restaurants, and commercial kitchens are a common cockroach call because warmth, food, and moisture suit them. We treat discreetly, work around your trading hours, and keep the records a food-safety audit expects. Because kitchens have so many cavities and appliances, a routine plan usually protects the site better than waiting for the next sighting.
